We Are Not All the Same!
Mar 01, 2025Many people like to put others in boxes or assume everyone who identifies as Deaf needs or wants the same things. I'll never understand this line of thinking. Every person is unique and should be treated as such.
When someone assumes I don't need a certain accommodation because a Deaf person they knew before didn't need it, doesn't automatically mean I don't. Just like some of us have hearing aids, CIs, read lips, use ASL, use SEE, etc. Sometimes our preferred method of communication was set up by our families and maybe we get to the point of feeling empowered enough to make that choice ourselves when we are older. Respect our decisions. We know what we need.
